Arise and Shine

Carlos J. Craig | Texas Conference President

As we approach the Easter season, many throughout the land see it as an opportunity to make one of their “bi-annual” appearances in church or perhaps to put on their “Sabbath-best” and take some family photos. Far too often, as Christians, we overlook the significance of the resurrection of Christ in our lives individually.

Notice the words of the prophet in Isaiah 60:1 (NKJV): “Arise, shine; for your light has come! And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you.” The biblical account of the majestic resurrection of Christ from the grave is spectacular, yet the true greatness of what He did is revealed in the everyday life of the believer. The power to rise out of sin and death is to be portrayed time and time again in our homes, schools, churches and communities. When the God of creation arises and exists in the fulness of our lives, we draw others to Him in amazing ways. That is truly the “power” of the gospel.

Chris Edwardson is a physician in the Dallas area. One day a judge came into his practice. Edwardson asked him what the real reason for his visit was since his leg, in a cast, didn’t need to be checked. I just thought maybe you could give me a reason to live, the judge replied, breaking down in sobs of despair. Over the next 60 minutes, Dr. Edwardson introduced the man to Jesus. After they prayed a prayer of liberation, the doctor inquired, What prompted you to come and see me of all people? The judge answered, As soon as I met you, I saw something in your eyes that told me you had what I needed. Something about your presence assured me that you knew the answer to life. I look into men and women’s faces every day, judging the truth. I could see that you believed with all your heart that what you were telling me was truth. It was enough to convince me.

The awesome power of the resurrection that shines forth in everyday demeanor is the most powerful witness for Christ that can possibly exist.

Let’s resolve in our hearts to arise and shine for the Master today and every day.
