Pathway to Health

Who Is Helping Whom?

Alden Ho

I have photographed many events within the Seventh-day Adventist church over the decades, and this was my first time to a Pathway to Health event. I really enjoyed the energy flowing out of the volunteers, everyone willing to help and to make it happen.

One particular incident stood out to me. I was in the area where people were getting their haircut. I was tipped off by the volunteers working there that one person wanted to get quite a bit of hair cut off, and have their beard trimmed up. I approach him to talk about photographing him while he was getting his haircut. He told me he was homeless, but had his own ministry that he was running. I took pictures of him before the haircut, and periodically while it was getting cut. I noticed that he had been in the chair for a long time because he was actually preaching to the person cutting his hair! I looked at the time stamp on my digital camera and he had been in that same chair for over an hour preaching to this young man who listened with keen interested. My favorite picture was not taken with my camera gear, but rather my iPhone!

Sometimes we think we are helping others, when in reality, they are helping us. Glory to God.
